ABOUT

Streetriders NYC is a bike protest collective formed in the wake of the George Floyd Protests in 2020. What began as efforts to use bikes and electric scooters to not only protect marching protestors but connect different marching groups ended up becoming a protest itself after the group of riders became larger than the foot marching protestors. At the time, New York Subway systems had limited service due to the pandemic, and most New Yorkers , in search of alternative transportation modes, resorted to riding bikes, thus as the protests in the city grew larger, more New Yorkers riding to protests ended up tailing the groups of bikes protecting marchers, becoming a massive movement of its own. The StreetRiders would congregate daily at Grand Army Plaza in Brooklyn, before dispatching to protect protest marchers across the city ( both in Brooklyn and Manhattan ). Eventually, Streetriders decided to form a bike protest of own called “Justice Rides”, the first of which drew several thousand riders. This was followed up by another one the next week which topped 10,000 riders. The group then further organized itself and created from within its ridership groups of marshalls, medic teams, mechanics, and more, having a total of approximately 100 team members working to protect and guide the 10,000 + riders attending the protests. Justice Rides became a weekly protest around New York City, bringing out over 10,000 riders weekly, and became the largest weekly Black Lives protest in the world that summer into fall, at its peak bringing out almost 20,000 riders on some Justice Rides. Apart from Protest rides, StreetRiders not only continued to send bikes to protect marchers, but used the mass collective to fight for and push for justice, lobbying the city council and mayor for interests of unrepresented communities, with several wins, such as successfully pushing for the city to divert emergency call response from NYPD to trained healthcare professionals, as well as helping the Attorney General’s office push to hold NYPD accountable for violence against Black Lives Matter protestors. StreetRiders also engaged in community service, cleaning up underserved neighborhoods, hosting food and clothing drives for low income neighborhoods, and even bike lane cleanups, while fighting and advocating for cyclists in New York City.
